As the internal evangelist for social computing technologies at NewsGator, I have been thinking a lot lately about why this technology so appeals to me. There are many reasons, some significant and others trivial, but I had a minor “aha moment” this morning in realizing the big win for me. That big win is that I absolutely love to assimilate a lot of information/data/opinion from disparate sources to build my own personal knowledge store. It is actually fun for me to research a topic and find myself exploring all sorts of tangents along the way. Perhaps I really do enjoy the journey as much as the goal?
The use of shared RSS feeds, documents, group discussions, bookmarks and tags opens up a vast inventory of knowledge sources. That can be good or bad. It is the user-enhanced nature of that inventory that makes it accessible and manageable. For example, a colleague bookmarked a fabulous presentation on Enterprise 2.0 that I probably would have never found on my own. Another colleague wrote a great blog post on a presentation at Office 2.0 – I didn’t have the opportunity to attend, but got to enjoy some of the best of the presentations as shared by trusted sources.
Of course, I must be honest. I get to use NewsGator products to make this all possible and that makes my passion for them even stronger. Nice when it all comes together like that on the job!
