I was trying to find a word more original than cheer or happiness. <g>
I was pondering a small exercise I did with the support staff at NewsGator and thought I would put out the call for similar ideas. I firmly believe that small and regular exercises in focusing on what is good and right instead of what is bad and wrong can have a profound impact on corporate culture. At a group lunch one afternoon, I asked each support professional to name his favorite customer - an actual human being - and why he enjoyed working with that person so much. Technical support and client services can be a very stressful occupation, so the opportunity to chat about the good is a small way to engender positive reflection.
We also laugh a LOT at NewsGator and we encourage plenty of humor and fun. Sure, it's a cliche, but that humor and fun has to be cultivated.
What are some of the activities or exercises you do at work for similar benefit?
Photoshop Phriday! Provides an opportunity to lampoon or compliment a fellow employee being careful to not go too far. Serves to lighten people up (do not take yourself too seriously) and allows one to hone his/her photoshop skills. Taking idea selections from department members helps the inclusion factor.
Be sure you focus on the "Good Sports" of the group.
