I hinted in a previous post that anyone pursuing a job at NewsGator should be able to demonstrate their passion (or at least some degree of enthusiasm) for NewsGator products. Since we have several job openings in my department, product development and support, I thought it would be worthwhile to throw out some of my views on what I think it takes to be successful here. Savvy candidates will find their way to this list.
- Loving what you do and loving what we do – certainly, this is a general trait that many employers seek. But every day I watch the best and brightest at NewsGator tear into tough challenges with zeal that simply can’t be faked. We work hard….at times very hard…and you simply can’t be your best in that type of environment if you don’t really, really like your occupation, the products you work on, and the people with whom you spend a lot of time each week.
- Flexibility and adaptability – we serve three different markets : Enterprise, Private Label and Consumer. We maintain a plethora of existing, award-winning products and are constantly developing new innovations. Given that, what you are working on one day could morph into something equally cool but different the next. We might need you to help out in different areas of the company and move between markets or product suites. If you demand a 9 to 5, predictable work day, we are probably not the best match for you. If you thrive on challenges and, yes, a little bit of healthy chaos, then you will probably fit in fine. We are not “cowboys” – we have a healthy mix of sound agile development practices and even some “semi-formal” processes. But, we don’t let any of that get in the way of responding to our customers and shareholders.
- A sense of humor and a strong self-esteem – as hard as we work, we play equally hard. There are some very close-knit friendships at NewsGator and I have never come to work and left for the day without laughing out loud at least 3 times. Usually much more frequently. We are noisy and boisterous and we like plenty of friendly debate. Great ideas are encouraged, welcomed and challenged.
If you share these traits, I promise….you will LOVE working here.
